Unites States Army Colonel Robert L. Howard was arguably the most decorated U.S. soldier since World War II. During his thirty-six years in the U.S. military, Col. Howard became the only soldier in our nation's history to be nominated for the Medal of Honor three times for three separate occasions; he won the award in 1971. When he was inducted into the Military Hall of Fame in 1980, he took with him eight Purple Hearts, over forty awards and numerous completed tours of duty with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, 2d Ranger Battalion and other military units. In addition to his military decoration, Col. Howard was awarded the "Outstanding American Citizen Award" in Birmingham, Alabama in 1973 and received the "Outstanding Citizen Award" in Dallas, Texas in 1993. On December 23rd, 2009, Col. Howard lost his battle with cancer, leaving behind three children and four grandchildren.
